Chinese dragon boat races on the river that burned.

MMMMMk, so I never got around to my Friday five and at this point I'm not intending to so maybe catch me next week!

Today, on the Cuyahoga River, the Chinese dragon boat races are being held. They're the cutest things, little flattish canoes with people rowing in unison, kept in time by a beating drum and I think the boys would get a kick out of them. It's part of Burnfest, a fundraiser being held to bring back to public awareness the need to keep litter and pollution of the River waters to a minimum. It's named as such because back in 1969, the Cuyahoga River caught fire and burned and burned and burned, feeding on the complete pollution of it's waters. Burnfest is sponsored by the Great Lakes Brewing Co. and is supposed to include award winning ribs and live bands and numerous other things. If we go, it'll be for the boats alone, as it's being held in an area called the Flats, commonly known as Party Central after dusk. And I don't think my sons are quite ready to become party animals yet.

I'm really amazed at the colorful history that some of Ohio has. Where else can you find a river that burns, and torso murders that confounded even Elliot Ness, and the spawning of people like Jeffrey Dahmer and Marilyn Manson and 8 presidents of the U.S., and even Thomas Edison?

It's interesting, and something I never really delved into until I had children and wanted to give them an idea of the history of our state.

I work tonight with StinkyAustin, boy wonder of unbrushed teeth. Last night was slammed, and we took almost $3000 in bonds. Lots of warrants were served and lots of revenue generated. Overall, though, it was a good night and went fairly swiftly. One of our officer's brought in his new baby, all of ten days old and he was beyond tiny and adorable and scrumptious. My baby will turn 6 the end of July and I'll honestly say that while I miss having a true baby, I'm glad I don't have one right now. I don't miss the midnight feedings and no sleep and dirty diapers and having to lug a diaperbag around. I do, however, miss the cuddles and the smell of clean baby and watching them grow.

Bleh. My housework is calling. Off to play domestic goddess.
