Thursdays

Thank God for Thursdays.
Grey's Anatomy and ER. That's all I'm saying. Quotes of the night...
" Is that blonde your girlfriend? Because the way you've been looking at her, you might as well mount her right now"...
" WHO'S DAMN PANTIES ARE ON THAT BOARD?"
I love GA. I love George. And I'd love to love McDreamy. Or Fin.

Today was an interesting day. Today was Meeting Day to try and set up Trev's 504. (A 504 is like a milder version of an IEP).
I say "try and set up" because it was like talking underwater---the communication wasn't as clear as it could have been. The principal is fairly fresh out of college and this is his first job. He's been principal for three years now (if I remember correctly) and I'm pretty sure he's done next to NO research when it comes to Asperger's Syndrome.
The teacher and school psych. seemed a little more in the know, as did the school liason. For some odd reason, Trev's first grade teacher sat in on the meeting. Not sure exactly why that was.
I gave my thoughts and ideas, as well as copies of his diagnosis and informational sheets that had been recommended by Trev's therapist. Trev's current teacher gave her input. Trev's principal sat there and nodded. When it came to actually hashing out the 504, he hadn't a clue what to put into it. At this point, it includes a time allowance for tests and assignments, a time-out space, opportunity to let off steam on the mini-tramp in the gym when things get to be too much, setting him in close proximity to the teacher, assistance in social settings, and accomodations for writing and self-expression.
It's difficult to put anything into play when it comes to school because he changes so much each year.
The only consistent things seem to be his need for personal space, his inability to pick up on social cues, his easy distractibility and the inconsistency of most everything else. That, in turn, makes it difficult to pinpoint the methods to follow to help him succeed. We're trial-and-erroring it to death.
Thankfully, at this point, I feel like his teacher and I are on the same page and she clearly has had some experience dealing with kids with autism so that helps. She also seems to want to help him succeed and that helps too.
Fingers crossed.
